FCT SAPZ to Boost Livelihoods in Local Communities

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly those in livestock farming, are set to benefit from the transformative Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, aimed at revitalizing agriculture and creating economic opportunities.

Mr. Lawan Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, FCTA, announced the initiative during a five-day workshop for Programme Implementation Committee members in Abuja. He emphasized that the SAPZ programme will not only enhance agricultural productivity but also generate revenue, create jobs, and develop infrastructure in local communities.

“This programme is a game-changer for the FCT’s agricultural sector, especially livestock farmers who will experience a boost in production, processing, and market access,” Geidam stated. He reaffirmed the FCTA’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative for the direct benefit of local farmers and rural dwellers.

Dr. Adesola Oyebanji, an agricultural consultant, highlighted that the workshop aims to equip committee members with essential project management skills to overcome both anticipated and unforeseen challenges. He urged the FCTA to address infrastructural gaps at the Paikon Kore Grazing Reserve, which is poised to become a central hub for livestock production and processing.

Hajiya Umma Abubakar, Programme Coordinator for the FCT, expressed gratitude to the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for their support. She assured stakeholders that the programme implementation committee is fully prepared to drive the transformation of the livestock sector, ensuring that farmers and agribusinesses reap the full benefits.

With the first phase of the SAPZ programme set for implementation in Cross River, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, and the FCT, it promises to empower local farmers by improving climate-adaptive infrastructure, enhancing agricultural value chains, and fostering sustainable agro-industrial development. The initiative, running from 2022 to 2026, is expected to provide lasting economic benefits and uplift thousands of livelihoods across the participating regions.
